A Hummingbirds' Guide to M.E.

Information on the neurological disease Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

Translations of articles on this site

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is an illness that has occurred in epidemic and sporadic forms all over the world. Unfortunately the bulk of information on M.E., particularly the good quality and unbiased information, is mostly only available in English. For the benefit of the many thousands of people with M.E around the world this has to change.

In time, I hope to be able to present here links to at least the basic texts on this site, in at least most of the most commonly used languages. For this to happen however, translators are urgently needed!

The following 2 page summaries are a first priority for translation:

If anyone is willing to translate more than 2 pages, it would also be wonderful to have translations of the following basic texts:

If you would be willing to translate even just 2 pages of text into another common language please contact me by email . Translations may of course be done over several months. If you can only work slowly due to being very busy (or being ill) that is fine. (Although it might be a good idea to tell me what you are working on so that someone else doesn't submit a translation first and duplicate your efforts!) If you want to put the translation on your own M.E. site and have me link to that, or if you don't have a site and want me to add the translation to this site, either is fine. You can also be credited with your translation using your full-name, your initials, or you can be anonymous if you wish.

For more information on M.E. issues in countries other than the US and UK, see: Articles sorted by Country. Sections available so far include Australia and the Netherlands.

Hopefully this list of tranlations below will soon be much longer. (Links to some translations of other M.E. texts by other authors are also included.)

Spoken language 'translations'

Thank you to those translators who have generously offered their translation services. There should be a small number of translated papers available here soon.

However, in thinking about translations and issues of accessibility, I realised there was another important language I left out, and that was, SPOKEN LANGUAGE! While many M.E. sufferers can read a small amount but really struggle with audio input, a significant number have the opposite problem and do much better with audio input rather than the written word.

My goal now is to slowly make all the 2 page summaries of each paper available in audio format, as mp3 downloads. I hope you find these spoken word essays useful.

See the new Audio and Video page for more information.

Danish

The M.E Site website contains good quality information and so is recommended. The site is available in an English version and in Danish.

ME Site: Information on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis 'Over 1 million people worldwide suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). This website is made for these people, and for their family and friends.' This excellent site has existed since 2003 as a Danish site, and this new English version was made public late 2005. The 'ME and Children' and 'Social Consequences' sections in particular are well-worth a read.

Sophia Mirza's story (from IiME) has been translated into Danish by Lajla Mark (of M.E. Site)
